See which teams hold you up

Two views answer “which team is holding us up?” and “whom are we holding up?”. Both are tabs of Blockline, in a space and on the Apps page.

Holding up others

When work in this space is making other spaces’ deliverables late, the second tab says how many: Holding up others (4). It is the blocking team’s view: each row starts with the work item here that holds another team’s deliverable up and whom it is assigned to, then their work and its space, when they need it, what it does to them (“45 days late”, “Circular”, “Not started”), its risk, its owner and its map. A space nobody waits on shows the tab with “(0)”. It is on a space’s own tab and on the Apps page when one space is picked.

Blockline in the Payments Core space, on Holding up others (4). Each row names the PAYC work item and its assignee, the other team’s deliverable it holds up, when that is needed and the effect: PAYC-3 makes MAPP-1 45 days late and STOR-1 6 days late, PAYC-4 makes STOR-2 6 days late, and PAYC-5 is in a circular dependency with DATA-1, Blocked.

The team matrix

The Team matrix tab counts the open dependencies between spaces. Rows wait on columns (“Space ↓ waits on →”), each by its key with the name on hover. Each cell is how many times the row’s space waits on the column’s space and the worst level among them, in one lozenge of that level’s colour, “2 At risk”: pick one to list those dependencies. A space waiting on itself is a grey lozenge. Download Excel and Download CSV save the dependencies themselves, one line each with both ends’ dates and the risk: the dependency register a steering meeting asks for.

The team matrix over four spaces, under a line saying it counts dependencies, not deliverables, each cell counting the row space’s open dependencies on the column space with the worst risk among them: STOR waits on PAYC three times, At risk, on DATA three times, Watch, and on MAPP twice, Blocked; MAPP waits on PAYC once, At risk, and on STOR twice, Blocked; PAYC waits on DATA twice, and DATA on PAYC once, Blocked; DATA waits on itself once, Watch. The STOR to PAYC cell is picked, listing STOR-4 waiting on PAYC-3 and STOR-7 waiting on PAYC-4, both At risk, and STOR-17 waiting on PAYC-9, OK, each with its reason.
