Epic Sum Up Free alternatives
Checked on 3 October 2026 against the Marketplace listings, the vendor’s site and Atlassian’s documentation.
If you rely on Epic Sum Up Free to see time rolled up on your Jira epics, there is a notice at the top of its Marketplace listing:
“This app will turn from the free Epic Sum Up Free App to a paid app called ESU Lite on October 5th 2026.”
As of 3 October 2026 that is most of what is known. ESU Lite’s price is not published: the listing still shows a free app, the Marketplace has no paid pricing for it, the help page the notice links for more information returns “page not found”, and the vendor’s pricing page does not mention ESU Lite. Nothing says what happens to existing installs.
What you lose is specific: time added up from every level below the epic, on the epic itself. Jira never does that on Free or Standard. This page covers what the free app did, what changes, and the alternatives in the order to try them: Jira’s own features, an Automation rule, Sumline (ours, built for exactly this gap), paying for ESU Lite or ESU, and other apps. Every fact about another vendor’s app was checked on 3 October 2026 against the page it links; listings change, so check them before you decide.
What Epic Sum Up Free did
- A progress bar on an epic with time values summed from its child issues: time spent, original estimate, remaining estimate, and time spent over original estimate.
- Calculated when you open the epic (“live-calculated”, in the vendor’s words).
- Export of the summed values from the Issue Navigator (the vendor’s plan comparison).
It was time only: the listing calls it “a single use case - visualizing live-calculated time values for epics”. Story points, other number fields, budgets, the detail view and the dashboard gadget are in the paid ESU app (its listing), which the vendor now calls ESU Standard, formerly Epic Sum Up.
What changes on 5 October
- The free app becomes ESU Lite, a paid app. The notice is on the free app’s own listing, so it reads as the same app changing its terms rather than a new app to install.
- The vendor is APTIS GmbH & Co. KG, which also makes the paid ESU app.
- ESU Lite’s price is not published as of 3 October 2026.
- The paid ESU app is free for sites with up to 10 users, then billed per user by Atlassian, at a rate that falls in larger bands.
If your team estimates in story points, the free app never rolled them up. The vendor’s step up for points is the paid ESU app. If your site has 10 or fewer Jira users, that app is free at your size and may be the simplest move.
Option 1: use what Jira already has
Best if you need “roughly how done is this epic” rather than exact totals.
- Time adds up one level. A story’s time tracking includes its subtasks, and an epic’s includes its stories’ own time, but time logged on subtasks never reaches the epic (JRACLOUD-70150). See Roll up logged time to the epic in Jira.
- Story points are not added up at all; Atlassian marked the request “Not Being Considered” (JRACLOUD-90636).
- The timeline’s progress bar shows each epic’s children by status, subtasks included, by count.
- The Epic report, on company-managed Scrum boards, shows an epic’s complete, incomplete and unestimated work by story points or count.
- Plans, on Jira Premium and Enterprise, rolls estimates up every level, inside the plan rather than on the issue.
The gap: on Free and Standard nothing on the epic itself says “34 of 55 hours spent across every level below it”. That is the gap the free app filled.
Option 2: an Automation rule
Best if you have a Jira admin who likes rules and can live with a number written to a field when the rule runs, rather than computed when you look. Automation comes with every Jira plan, and every run counts toward your site’s Automation usage. The rules, step by step, with their limits:
- Sum story points from subtasks to epics in Jira (team-managed too)
- Roll up logged time to the epic in Jira
- Jira epic % complete by points and by issue count
Where rules stop: the total is written when a rule runs, so a story moved to another epic, a deleted story or an edited worklog leaves it wrong until something else changes, and each rule carries one field up one level.
Option 3: Sumline, the time on the epic without rules
Sumline is our app. As of 3 October 2026 it is in Marketplace review. It does what the free app did, time added up on the epic, and goes further: every level from subtask to initiative, story points as well as time, and nothing for an admin to maintain. Free for up to 10 users, then billed per user by Atlassian.
- The time you had, from every level. Original estimate, time spent and remaining, added up from subtask to story, epic and initiative (initiatives need Jira Premium), children in other spaces included.
- Story points too, which the free app never added up, in company-managed and team-managed spaces: the right field is found automatically.
- On the issue, with nothing to set up. Every issue with children shows its totals as soon as Sumline is installed, with % complete by estimate and by issue count.
- Computed when you look, as the free app was, so a moved story or an edited worklog shows on the next open. No rule to fix, no field to keep in step.
- No silent wrong numbers. When a story and its subtasks both carry an estimate it counts one level and lists the value it left out; unestimated children are named, never counted as zero.
- A table per space or across spaces, one row per epic, with CSV export, and a dashboard gadget.
- It only reads, so its totals are not a Jira field you can search with JQL.
Next step: the button at the end of this page.
Option 4: pay for ESU Lite or ESU
Best if the progress bar is built into how your team runs sprints.
- No migration, assuming ESU Lite keeps the same progress bar.
- The paid ESU app adds story points, other number fields, budgets, a detail view and a dashboard gadget.
- Watch for: a Cloud app is licensed for every Jira user on your site, not only the people who use it. Atlassian: “Purchase the license tier that matches the number of users you have licensed for your host product” (Marketplace licensing).
Option 5: other Marketplace apps
Several apps overlap with the free edition. Each is free for up to 10 users unless noted; check the listing for the rest of its pricing.
- sumUp for Jira (Decadis): dashboard gadgets that add up story points, time estimates, worklogs and custom fields, grouped by any field.
- Sum Up Reports for Jira & Confluence (Bloompeak): table reports where you choose the columns, then group and total the ones you want.
- Status & Progress Report, Sum Up Dashboard Gadget for Jira (Agilis LT): a dashboard gadget that sums story points by epic, assignee, space, sprint or JQL.
- Epic Sum Summary - Epic Time Stats (Heckr): time spent, original estimate, remaining and % complete on the epic, tasks and subtasks included. A small app, last released in September 2021, and paid from the first user.
- ScriptRunner for Jira Cloud (Adaptavist): scripted fields compute anything, and its examples include summing story points below an epic. Worth it if you already have it; a lot of tool for this one job.
Before 5 October: a short checklist
- Find where you depend on it. Open a few epics and look for the progress bar. Ask the people who actually read it.
- Export what you need. If you report from the Issue Navigator export of summed values, pull the current numbers now.
- Check your user count. 10 or fewer: the paid ESU app and Sumline are both free at that size. More: watch the listing for ESU Lite’s price and compare it with the options above.
- Decide, then tell the team. A progress bar quietly disappearing mid-sprint is worse than any of the options here.
