Epic progress on a Jira dashboard

Checked against Atlassian’s documentation on 12 October 2026.

You want a dashboard that shows every epic and how far along it is, for a weekly review or for people who never open a board. On Reddit it reads “I’m looking for some guidance on creating a dashboard in Jira to display the story points completed per epic.” This page says which of Jira’s own gadgets come closest, how to put a number on them, then what Sumline’s gadget shows.

What Jira does by itself

Atlassian’s list of dashboard gadgets has none for epic progress. The closest:

  • Filter Results “displays the results when you filter work items”: a list of your epics with the columns you choose. It shows the fields an epic already has, so no progress unless something writes it there.
  • Work item Statistics and Pie Chart group a filter’s work items by a field: how many stories each epic has, by count.
  • Road Map shows versions due for release and the progress towards them, by version rather than by epic.
  • Sprint Burndown and Sprint Health follow one sprint.

Outside the dashboard, the timeline’s progress bar counts each epic’s children by status (Atlassian), and the Epic report shows one epic’s story points on a company-managed Scrum board (Atlassian).

A number on the dashboard

  1. Write each epic’s progress into number fields with Automation: the rule and its two formulas, by count and by story points, are in Jira epic % complete by points and by issue count.
  2. Save a filter for your epics, for example issuetype = Epic AND statusCategory != Done, across the spaces you need.
  3. Add a Filter Results gadget on that filter and pick the columns: Summary, Status and your Done % fields.

Where it stops: the numbers are as current as the rule’s last run, an epic’s stories count but not their subtasks, and an epic with nothing to divide by has no meaningful percentage. The rule’s limits are listed in that guide.

With Sumline

Sumline is our app. Its gadget puts epic progress on any Jira dashboard with nothing to set up but the spaces:

  • Pick the spaces in the gadget’s settings; every epic that is open or was done in the last 90 days follows, in Rank order, the backlog’s, ten to a page.
  • Two progress bars on each row, by estimate and by issue count, with warnings such as unestimated children.
  • Rows open to the issues under them.
  • Open Sumline opens the full table on the same spaces, with the figures, sorting, filters and Excel and CSV downloads.
  • One refresh, Jira’s: the gadget’s reload icon or the dashboard’s Refresh recalculates it.

Team-managed and company-managed spaces add up alike, each from its own story-points field. Sumline only reads, so its percentages are not a Jira field you can put in a Filter Results column. How each one is worked out is in How the numbers are calculated.

The Sumline gadget on a Jira dashboard: eight epics from two spaces, each with progress by estimate and by issue count, and “unestimated” warnings on two of them.
