Move work

When someone is over capacity and someone else has room, Move hands a work item over, with everyone’s load in front of you. With Plan unscheduled work, it is one of the two things Workline changes in Jira.

Move a work item

  1. Open the person who is over capacity.
  2. On the work item, open its menu (⋯) and press Move.
  3. The dialog says what is being moved: its remaining hours and the weeks they fall in. A work item with no dates or sprint sits in no week yet, and says so.
  4. Under it, every other person on the plan, the lightest first, with their hours in those weeks before and after, such as 0h → 24h, and the lozenge after.
  5. Pick a person. Add a New due date if you want one; leave it empty to keep the date the work item has.
  6. Press Move.

Only people who can be assigned the work item are listed: not its assignee, not a placeholder, not an inactive account. If nobody else is on the plan, there is no Move.

What changes in Jira

Workline sets the work item’s assignee and, when you gave one, its due date. Nothing else is written by Move: no estimate, no other field.

It does it as you, with your Jira permissions, so Jira’s history shows you made the change. If Jira refuses, because you may not edit the work item or the person may not be assigned it, the dialog shows Jira’s own sentence and nothing changes.

Moving is Jira’s to allow, not the setting that says who can book. See Settings.

After the move

The plan reads Jira again, so the hours sit in the new person’s weeks: they land in the same weeks the work item was in, or in the weeks of the new due date. Workline works out the dialog’s figures in your browser from the plan on screen, so they match what you see.

Read The plan for how the hours are placed, and What is stored for the permission Move needs.
