Roles and rows

A role names what someone does, such as Backend developer or Designer. Roles let the plan filter by role and show a row per role, and so do epics and spaces.

Set the roles

A Jira admin names the roles under Roles in the settings, up to 50, and gives each person one: pick a person, pick a role, Give role. A person has one role; picking them again changes it. A placeholder takes its role in its own form, a Role field that shows once roles are named. See Settings.

The plan then writes a person’s role in grey under their name, and the downloads gain a Role column.

Filter by role

The Role filter is drawn only where roles are named and someone on the plan has one. Pick one or several roles and only their people show. No role is offered where only some people have one.

Rows

The Rows filter chooses what a row is:

  • Person, the plan as it always is.
  • Role, where roles are named and someone has one: a row per role, in the settings’ order, No role last. A role’s cell adds its people’s hours, and its placeholders’, against the hours they can work, with the share as a lozenge. Open a role to see its people. Over capacity and With time free count roles.
  • Epic, where a work item has an epic: a row per epic with the hours its open work items need each week, and No epic for the rest. An epic has no capacity, so there is no lozenge. Open it to see its work items, with their assignee, and a line for the time booked on it.
  • Space, where the work items span spaces: the same, per space.

In Story points the epic and space rows show points. The filters, Team, Space, People, Role and Over capacity, apply before the rows are made. The Total row stays everyone’s, and the counts and the Over capacity filter are not drawn for epic and space rows. Unscheduled is as it is for people. The past weeks sum in every kind of row: see Weeks back.

Where a booking counts

A booking counts under the epic or space it is on, and a booking on a work item under that work item’s epic. A booking in your own words, or on a space or a work item with no epic, shows under No epic in epic rows, and in own words alone under Not in a space in space rows.

An epic is the parent Jira names for a work item when it is an epic, else the first epic up its chain of parents. Workline reads a parent it has not already read, once, as you.

Download, then Excel or CSV, gives the rows on screen, and Copy link keeps the choice: the Rows and Role filters are in the address. Rows is kept by Clear filters and by a new Show plan.
