Story points

Where your work items carry story points, the plan can count in them. Nothing about hours goes away: switch back to Hours and the plan is as it was.

Switch the plan to points

The Unit filter has two choices, Hours and Story points. It is drawn only where the work items in the plan carry story points: the site’s Story point estimate or Story Points field. Where none do, there is nothing to choose and the plan stays in hours.

In Story points, each work item’s points are spread over its dates the way hours are: its start and due dates, else its sprint’s dates, from today on. Work with no dates or sprint is Unscheduled, in points. A parent and its children count once, the children’s points winning, as for estimates. A work item with an estimate but no story points is not counted, and a grey line under the table says how many.

How a person’s pace is worked out

The lozenge compares the points planned in a week with the points that person does in a week. Workline takes that from the first of these that applies:

  1. The person’s own points a week, set by a Jira admin in the settings.
  2. The site’s points a week, set there for everyone.
  3. Their pace: the points of the work items they finished in the last 6 weeks, divided by 6. A work item counts as finished when its status is in the Done category, on the day it was resolved.

A week in which the person has fewer working hours, because of part-time hours, a holiday or time off, gets a smaller share of the points a week, in proportion. A week with no working hours shows Off.

A person with no pace and no setting shows their points with no lozenge, and a grey line under the table names them and says what would give them one: set points a week in the settings, or finish some work items with points.

Bookings

A booking is in hours. In story points Workline turns booked hours into points at the person’s own rate, their points a week against their hours a week. For a person with no pace and no setting there is no rate, so their bookings are left out and a grey line says so.

The settings

A Jira admin sets Points a week, for everyone, and a person’s own Points a week, under Story points in the settings. A number above 0 and up to 1,000, to a tenth. A person’s own wins over the site’s; left empty, the pace applies. See Settings.

What stays in hours

The work item panel, the Details column and the dashboard gadget are in hours, whatever the plan’s unit. Total and Unscheduled follow the plan’s unit, and so do the downloads, with “(points)” in their headings.

Read The plan for how work is placed in weeks, and Weeks back for the points finished in the past weeks.
