Team capacity per sprint in Jira
Jira Cloud, sprints and time tracking.
A sprint is a promise of what a team can finish in its dates. This page says how to check that promise against what the team can work in Jira, then how Workline does it from the sprint’s dates and compares it with the hours logged.
What Jira does by itself
Jira’s backlog totals the estimates of the work items in a sprint, and a sprint has a start date and an end date. What that total is measured against is left to you: how many people, how many days, minus whose holiday. Jira’s time tracking settings give one working day and one working week for the whole site, with nothing for part-time or for time off. To check a sprint properly you take the total, count the team’s working hours in its dates by hand, and compare the two. When the total does not fit, moving work from one person to another is done one work item at a time, without seeing what it does to the other person’s weeks.
What Workline does
Workline is our app. It plans the open work items of a sprint by their remaining estimates, spread over the sprint’s dates when a work item has no start and due dates of its own, and puts them against the hours each person can work in those weeks. Filter to the space, or to Team (a Jira group a Jira admin offers), and every member gets a row, with or without work, so a person with room shows as having it.
The hours a person can work are Jira’s time tracking settings or Workline’s own, with part-time hours, the holidays everyone shares and a person’s time off. A week with a holiday has fewer hours to work, so the same planned hours show a higher share.
When a person is over, open them and open a work item’s menu (⋯) and press Move. The dialog lists everyone else on the plan with their hours in that work item’s weeks before and after, the lightest first. Pick one, add a new due date if you like, and Jira reassigns it as you. Workline changes nothing in Jira unless you press Move or Apply (on dates for work with none), and then only the assignee and the due date, or the start and due dates. It never changes a sprint or an estimate.
A sprint ends, and a work item still open past it is planned for today and marked Late, so unfinished work is not dropped from the plan.
See Move work, Working hours and holidays for how the hours are set, and Jira workload by person for who is over capacity. Back to Workline.
