Placeholders
A placeholder is a row in the plan for someone you have not hired yet. It holds bookings, so you can see whether the work you have planned for a hire fits the people you have.
Add a placeholder
Press Placeholder above the plan and fill in the dialog:
- Name. The role you will hire for, such as Backend developer.
- First day. Before it, every week reads a dash and does not count as time free.
- Hours a day and Working days. Leave both empty to use the site’s week.
- Team. Optional, one of the teams a Jira admin offers. With a team picked in the filters, only that team’s placeholders show.
- Role. Optional, one of the roles in the settings, drawn once roles are named. A role’s row counts the placeholder with its people. See Roles and rows.
Holidays apply to a placeholder. It has no time off.
Book it
A placeholder is booked on a space, an epic or a work item, never on words: a role is hired for some work. Press Book time, pick the placeholder in For and give the key. See Book time. The bookings show where the plan counts them, in the placeholder’s weeks.
On the plan

The placeholder’s row follows the people, with a dashed avatar, its name, the lozenge Placeholder and under it a line such as From 30 Nov · 40h a week. It is counted in the Total row, in Over capacity and in people with time free, as a person is. Open it to see its bookings.
Fill it with a person
When you hire, open the placeholder, open the menu (⋯) beside Book time and press Fill with a person, then pick who. Every booking moves onto that person and the placeholder is deleted. The person’s row then shows the bookings, with their own work items.
In the same menu, Edit changes its name, first day, week and team. Delete removes the placeholder and its bookings, and its tip says what goes.
Who can add one
The same people who can book: everyone who can open Workline, or the groups a Jira admin chose in Settings. Placeholders are kept in Workline’s own storage on Atlassian, with a role name, its dates and hours. See What is stored.
