Jira hours into Xero or QuickBooks invoices

Checked against Atlassian’s and Intuit’s documentation on 3 November 2026.

The hours are in Jira, the invoice is in Xero or QuickBooks, and somebody copies one into the other each month. This page shows what Jira’s export gives you for that, where it stops, then what Logline does.

What Jira does by itself

  • Export a search’s results to CSV. project = ACME AND worklogDate >= 2026-09-01 AND worklogDate <= 2026-09-30 finds the work items with time logged in September; all fields adds the worklogs as Log Work columns (Export Jira worklogs to Excel).
  • Xero and QuickBooks Online import invoices from a CSV. Each wants its own columns: a customer, an invoice number, dates, a description, a quantity and a unit price.

Where it stops:

  • Jira’s file is not an invoice file. It has one row per work item, with all-time hours in seconds, and no customer, rate or invoice number. Someone rebuilds it by hand into the columns the import takes.
  • No rates. Hours times rate is a spreadsheet step, every month, for every client.

With Logline

Logline is our app. With billable time and hourly rates set once by a Jira admin, a report has Download for Xero and Download for QuickBooks at the end of the buttons beside its name. Each saves the billable lines as a CSV in the shape that tool’s invoice import takes. The steps are in Make the invoice in Xero or QuickBooks.

The file has:

  • one line per work item and rate, with the hours as the quantity, in decimal hours, and the rate as the unit price;
  • the client as the customer, one invoice per client, which must match your Xero contact or QuickBooks customer exactly;
  • a draft invoice number, such as DRAFT-20261103-1, and the download day as the invoice and due date;
  • the account and the tax rate blank, because Logline does not know yours.

Then you import it: in Xero, Sales › Invoices › Import; in QuickBooks Online, Settings › Import data › Invoices, where you match the columns and pick YYYY-MM-DD as the date format. Each invoice arrives as a draft. You set its number, account and tax, and send it from Xero or QuickBooks.

Logline makes no invoice and sends nothing to Xero or QuickBooks: you import the file yourself. Xero takes about 500 lines in a file. QuickBooks takes at most 1,000, and does not import invoices this way when sales tax is set up in your account. Both change their menus now and then, so check their own help for the current path.

Every setting is in Settings. For a document to send with the invoice, see A client timesheet PDF from Jira worklogs. More on the Logline home page.

The report’s billing downloads: Download PDF, Download for Xero and Download for QuickBooks.
The report’s buttons: Download for Xero and Download for QuickBooks save the billable lines as each one’s import file.
